How do you fight leukemia Iowa style? You cure it with corn.
Owner Susie Ketterer’s brother is James “Jimmy” Lange, a LeClaire Paramedic with Medic EMS, who was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in October of 2014. This type of leukemia doesn’t have many treatment options at its early stages, outside of monitoring the progress of the disease. When Jimmy’s doctor told him that there was basically nothing he could do right now to help himself, he had a response:
“I can do something, let’s find a cure for leukemia!”
He rallied a group of people on Facebook and created, “Cure It With Corn.” This isn’t a fundraiser for Jimmy. This is an event of hope designed to raise money, educate potential bone marrow donors, increase awareness and find a cure on behalf of all people battling leukemia.
Simantel pitched in by designing the messaging, logo and Tshirt for the event. In order to publicize the event, supporters were encouraged to take their “Cure It With Corn” shirts around the world and spread the word.
The shirts have been to Paris, Austin, Sicily, Hawaii. They have been sported in front of the White House, Mount Rushmore, the Arch, Lake Superior, and multiple military bases. The shirts even made the TODAY show.
If you find yourself near LeClaire, Iowa this weekend, be sure to attend the event (details below). Location too far? Please consider making a donation to the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
